Sometimes a good corn chip would be just right for having with a chili supper on a cold night. But how on earth can there be a healthy chip? So I decided to try something unheard of - I just started thinking outside the box to dream up something new to go with my favorite Mexican foods! I made my own tortilla chips - taa...daa!
Here is what I did - I took plain uncooked corn tortillas right out of the package and torn them into pieces.
And I put them into my food dehydrator filling every level but not letting any of the edges touch together.
I put the lid on it and turned it on. That's it! I let them dehydrate overnight and by the next day ..... I had crispy chips that looked just like the store bought one - but much better!
Can you believe it! That's all I did! Once done I put them into airtight zippy bags.
We had guacamole that day - the sea salt and lemon juice I had added in the guacamole took care of the need for salty chips. These are very light, very crispy, nothing greasy about them, and they taste really good! I was so pleased about them ....MMM good!
I am not sure just how healthy these are - but I know that they have to be much better for us than regular chips because they are not fried and have no preservatives on them. And tonight we shall have TVP chili with chips!
Why not try it for yourself!
BRILLIANT!! I knew about making dried fruit with a dehydrator, and of course bread crumbs (crumbs can also be done in oven, add spices & herbs, sooo delicious, better than store crumbs). We have wanted better tortilla chips, because along with healthy salsa they are a great snack. I have been hunting for a thrift store dehydrator, I hope we find one soon. THANK YOU. Love, Michele
